We have had so much to do at Our Mother of Sorrows/St. Ignatius over the past month. Our Students kicked off the Christmas Season with a trip to Longwood Gardens! Lucky for us, twenty 5th-8th graders got to attend the field trip, and experience the magic of Longwood during the holidays. This trip was made possible thanks to members of our school community and the generosity that was shown at our “Believing in Achieving” event. Our students love getting to visit Longwood Gardens, and the trip is always a favorite of theirs. This year we spent most of the time indoors because the weather was in the low 20’s but the succulent Christmas tree, and the Bonsai trees inside the greenhouse were the students’ favorite part of the display.
After Longwood Gardens came the school-wide celebrations! Our partners at the Penn Newman Center helped spread Christmas cheer to students in 1st-5th grade. “Operation Santa” allows for the opportunity to celebrate Christmas in the classroom. Students cried tears of joy when they got their Hot Wheels, Art sets, and Barbie Dolls. Weeks later, they still talk about the time that Santa surprised them in class!
While one Santa was roaming the halls, the Pre-K and Kindergarten students couldn’t understand why Santa wasn’t visiting them, but little did they know, they had their own Christmas celebration planned. Our longtime partner International Raw Materials (IRM) not only donates Poinsettias for our annual Christmas Concert each year, but also puts on an entire afternoon celebration for our smallest students. Only a week after “Operation Santa”, IRM brought another Santa to our school to surprise Pre-K and Kindergarten. Students got to meet Santa, shake his hand, and with the help of many elf volunteers our Pre-K and Kindergartners had their own dose of Christmas cheer!
To wrap up our Christmas season we are hosting our annual Christmas Concert in our gym on December 22nd at 7:00 PM. Every grade has prepared two songs, and our Praise Dancers have been practicing their hearts out. Christmas is such a special time for us and it is made possible with the help and generosity of our partners. We are so grateful to have so many ways to celebrate the holidays with our students and their families. Thank you to everyone who makes this possible. Merry Christmas from your friends at Our Mother of Sorrows/ St. Ignatius School.
